“Destination Home”, is a song I started in Andrea Stolpes Thirty Day Writer Challenge.

Part of the lyrics came to me in the airport. I had some time to wait because of a plane change. I found a place to rest, opened my notebook and wrote down a few ideas.

“I checked my luggage at the gate”, “there is solar weather and delays”.

I was thinking of traveling and “home”, and what that means to other people. We all have a place we call home. What would be the basis for a universal song that connects listeners with the idea of home? After waiting for a few hours I was able to board a plane. I just wanted to get on a flight to “somewhere”.

A few days later I was able to dig deeper into the title. The lyrics I had written down in the airport gave me a starting off point. I had previously finished reading “The Twelfth Planet”, by Zecharia Sitchin. His book had me thinking of all kinds of ideas about life and our place in the universe. I’ve always loved traveling and it seems like a universal thing people enjoy. I converted the airport scene to a space airport and imagined homes of beings on other planets. Do they have barbecues and recyclers? I played with imagery that materialized from my writings.

Eventually the song came together. I saw a story line for many songs and imagined what a space opera would sound like. This song led to a series of other songs that I eventually named the “Terrestrial Series”. I drew upon the airport lyrics and my own writings to place the listener within a space traveling scene.

“Destination Home” is an earlier song I wrote in this space ballad like form. I think it came out well in my recordings. It is interesting how these songs grow on their own.
